I think #7 is the key topic in this post. To many web 2.0 sites are coming out with great social feature sets and ajax designs. But they lack the essential point of a product, satisfy a need better then anyone else.

Thanks for this excellent post

I found your post very helpful, although I have questions after reading it. I’m currently consulting with an online start-up, helping out with community development before the site is launched. We’re struggling with how to make our online community for women different from what’s already out there, and where women will visit every single day. Is there a super successful community site out there that we could look to as an example?

[...] Now, when he says virtual world, is he talking about Second Life like worlds, or is he talking about community management on online forums, discussion boards, et al.? Because if it’s the latter, then it definitely is more of a job of the present since apart from me, there are so many of my friends who’re currently in similar jobs. Actually, Joshua from Bocardo, through whom I stumbled upon the definition lists community management as a mandatory requirement a long time ago. [...]

Ok, “Moderation is a full-time job”. But you can save a lot of time with a useful app, and so as the users. Point 6 is interesting and it happens very usually.

That's totally true! I didn't care enough for my last project - and it is still failing :-)
It's (like always) just a matter of money. So what do you think, how many "community managers" do I need (per user/per member/per site/per topic...?) for my projects.
