I tried to “plus” a story, and was told that I “need to be online to vote.” Okay, I registered an account, went back to the front page, and voted for a story. The big plus-sign changed from light blue to dark blue, but there’s no other indication of human presence there. The absence of vote counts makes the site feel clinical and uninhabited – there are no fingerprints, the floors are all squeaky-clean, and your microwaved dinner gets pushed through a slot in the door by an unseen hand.
