everybody is looking for something....how many times has a friend turned me on to software to try...or they're on it...like a chat or mail system....I got on gmail because my friends were on it. I got on myspace because my friends were on it. etc...etc...

As the web ebbs and flows and changes we're moving into niche marketing and huge corporate style content sites will be the only ones at the top. Not because of anything other than bigger marketing budgets.

We tried to aim at a niche market with our product Oikos Community Console. The web app is designed for the church ministry market. We started out wanting to be a christian based company but we're playing with the idea to sell a general console.

I totally with the group reasoning. Very good!

[...] From Designing for Groups - How can you design software that attracts groups to use it? The biggest problems in design are not code validation problems. Nor are they visual design problems. Nor interaction design problems. (although these are all very real, important problems) [...]

What you're recommending is a web version of a television pilot. Create a focus group, see what works and what doesn't, tweek, and repeat until you come out with a YouTube or a MySpace. We're already starting to see this though like when Writely opened their app for "beta" users and what the JotSpot guys are doing now. Just like on t.v. though, hopefully someone doesn't copy your idea and get it out to the market faster then you do.

I saw just how cool this can be recently when, upon opening a message with an attached Excel file from a colleague in GMail, there appeared an option to "Open in Google Spreadsheets" and view it online, together! How awesome is this? It's still an Excel file too, but now we can view it in a group setting, highlight things and ask questions in the live chat area, and even edit if we want to, exporting as Excel when we are done.

The design revelation here is that spreadsheets are things that people use in *meetings* to make decisions. Excel doesn't see them quite that way. Excel treats a spreadsheet as something one person makes (or edits) and others review later.

Great post!

This is a topic that has been stuck in my head for a while now. Take MySpace for example. I used to not have a account, until 98% of my friends insisted that I create on. They went as far as offering to create one for me. Talk about willingness to use a service!

When designing anything today, be it web/desktop stuff. There is great need to find the medium between usability, motivation and like you mentioned in the post above, the 'Group Effect'.

Great Stuff.
