@Jonathan: it's not just customized templates, it's the entire application even if you don't touch anything. It's a mess.

Thankfully, they have recently announced a redesign, led by the fine folks at Adaptive Path. So hopefully this improves.

Am I the only one that is totally mystified by this blog post? MySpace is a site that hosts pages made by random people, and those people can (within certain restrictions) do anything they want. Applying any kind of design critique whatsoever to the WHOLE of MySpace is surely pointless.

Please can you re-write this post to address, say, eBay, or Amazon. Two hugely successful sites that ARE designed (in the sense of having point of decision making about it), and are extremely poor.

Myspace is just plain ugly. All the items on the pages are wronlgly designed in terms of size, and there are no sense of colour matching in the design. And the interaction is unaesthetic.

I'm a web developer and have recently "Had" to create a MySpace page to promote a band because most people in the industry (at least here in the UK) won't even look at a band unless they have a MySpace! What happened to Websites.

As for design, I have never in my life seen such a poorly desgined website do so well!! I'm serious!!

If they'd spent another 30 secs developing that site, it would be INFINITELY easier for people to customize their pages and they'd look so much better!!

One of the reasons people create such poorly designed MySpace pages is the limitation they have.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't have a SINGLE web developer working for them!!

Nice article, but I like the discussion even more. For me it reflects the different worlds of designers and 'ordinary' users. We as designers think users want a nice layout, good usability and beautiful pages. Maybe we got it all wrong? It is well possible that personalization is more important then how it actually looks.

Then to the second point, what do we consider good 'visual design'? From a designers perspective that world is likely the opposite of a fiifteen year old. Interesting stuff, thanks for all contributions.

It annoys me each time these so-called entreprenuers comment on how ugly myspace is even though I find it ugly myself. I've even read comments saying that it's to where the dumb and uneducated people go as opposed to facebook, where the smart and highly educated folks 'spend their time.' My usual reply is that if they don't get it by now, I wish them all the luck on their start-up. Next time, I'll send them this article. Or maybe not.

Tribe.net is a very similar site that’s a lot more tasteful in its design. But it does not have the usage of myspace, because it limits your freedom and makes you design your profile basically as Tribe’s owners wanted you to do it.
