Dunning spoke of an epiphany associated with this concept. Just as Nate said, "we're not very good at knowing what we don't know," but the light dawns-at least on occasion.

In all of education this concept awaits us. As in the song, "Colour of the Wind," "But if you walk in the footsteps of a stranger, you'll learn things you never knew, you never knew." That's why great teachers have such value--they know the things we never knew or at least can point the way.

It's all summed up with:

"We’re not very good at knowing what we don’t know."

This is why I try and surround myself with people who are smarter than me (both online and offline). I believe that being a life-learner helps you learn more about yourself. I also believe in journaling and taking notes - and then taking time to review those notes - allowing you to really introspect on yourself. By doing these things, it helps you to become more self aware.
