Because Ebay is a real market where real money is exchanging hands, members who have a fast and enjoyable experience dealing with each other often have repeat transactions. Each consumer has a certain fear of the unknown and from my observations, the "Favorite Sellers" aspect of Ebay is used to reduce the risk of transaction. Often members who have repeatedly positive transactions with certain sellers will establish a patronage. Feedback is a secondary goal for Ebay members, successful transaction of goods always trumps feedback except in exceptional cases. @Berlin

Why? Members often change usernames. And "if the same member leaves more than one positive rating, it will only count once." Suggest that people may prefer interactions on social sites as opposed to in person communications. When other times, the in person contact is more powerful.
