@Berlin
I disagree that "chance of doing business again" is unimportant. Because Ebay is a real market where real money is exchanging hands, members who have a fast and enjoyable experience dealing with each other often have repeat transactions. Each consumer has a certain fear of the unknown and from my observations, the "Favorite Sellers" aspect of Ebay is used to reduce the risk of transaction.

Often members who have repeatedly positive transactions with certain sellers will establish a patronage.

Feedback is a secondary goal for Ebay members, successful transaction of goods always trumps feedback except in exceptional cases.

"Record of past behavior" is all that matters to most members on ebay. identity and "chance of doing business again" is not important. Why? Members often change usernames. And "if the same member leaves more than one positive rating, it will only count once." To increase feedback count, members avoid buying from the same seller twice.

Josh -- in your research -- do you see people leaning more towards social sites for certain types of communications?

Suggest that people may prefer interactions on social sites as opposed to in person communications. When other times, the in person contact is more powerful.

Sometimes, sites add functions, thinking that this will encourage communications & collaboration -- when what people really want to do is meet in person or use the phone :)

Josh, Enjoyed your talk yesterday at UI12 and enjoyed meeting you briefly at the conference. I liked how you showed examples like this to illustrate the theory that you were presenting. I also like the Amazon graphic and how you showed the integrated features in the page of how they were encouraging social participation.

Keep up the good work -- Jeff
