		<description>Yes, vanderwal, there were certainly sites before Friendster to have friend features. One that predates even Ryze is PlanetAll (sold to Amazon and became &quot;friends&quot; feature there) that had friend functionality even before any social networking site. 

Fixed the copy, though, to reflect that they weren&#039;t the first. Thanks.</description>

		<description>It was Ryze that created the pivot on the friend and not Friendster. Friendster copied much of the interaction from Ryze and but a prettier skin on it. Ryze predates Friendster by 18 months to 2 years.</description>

		<description>making people the pivot in chowhound wouldn&#039;t make sense. the focus is on food, ie knowledge about food and all. there are lots of websites like this where we go for information and really don&#039;t want our activities or names in the homepage (for instance wikipedia or travel websites)
