The small transactions are cross-subsized by their charge of 4% on successfully funded projects of $1000 and over. I can see quite a few projects topping out at $999 ...

Also - Paypal limits their free Personal Accounts to receiving a maximum of $500 per month. Any decent project will need to collect money at a higher rate than that, so I think fundable.org is designed to push more people into getting Professional/Business Paypal accounts.

The longest default period over which money may be raised is 6 weeks. Yes - one can negotiate with Fundable.org. for a longer period, but with the default settings the maximum amount that can be raised without upgrading one's Paypal status is $750 - not much can be done to change the world with that kind of cap.

In the mean time we can have fun with the smaller projects - will people pay me to NOT write something boring ...

Hmm, I do wonder how they get around the PayPal fees because 100 people paying $10 via PayPal doesn't add up to $1,000. But getting back to your point Joshua, yes, elevator pitches are worth their weight in gold. I don't work on projects if I can't pitch them in a sentance or two.
