I think another factor in the uptake of RSS will be browsers getting in on the act, I never cared much for RSS until my beloved Firefox added it to it's many talents. Now I check my RSS feeds a couple of times a day. I n fact I noticed you'd posted this in Firefox...

I didn't find this post via Sage (Firefox) but I did come across it using a standalone newsreader.

It took me a while to come around, but I'm completely sold on the concept now.

The only drawback I've heard from some bloggers is that visits from RSS links don't give them the information they like to see in their referrer logs.

Great article, Josh!

From the title, I thought you might talk about podcasting some in this article. Perhaps that would be a good follow-up?

I will definitely be talking about podcasting in the very near future. I've been devouring them constantly for the last 3 weeks.

Yes, on second thought my title is a bit misleading.

Actually, I have my first "podcast" available on my <a href="http://robinson.bokardo.com">Robinson site</a>. It's a reading of a short poem.

Basically, I was simply testing out Garageband to see if I could make an audio file...It worked but the file is ~600K for 24 seconds of audio. I'll have to tweak some things in the future if I'm going to give my own podcasts.

Usability of RSS is an interesting topic. It's still in 'early adopter' mode really, but with the advent of services like Feedburner (who can convert your RSS feed into a user-friendly webpage) and once Microsoft introduces its RSS Reader into Office (surely when, rather than if?) - *then* we'll really notice usability of RSS explode.

For now, a month or two ago I tried explaining RSS to corporate folks at my company. Their reaction was underwhelmed to say the least. One of them actually said to me something like "I tried to click through on the RSS feed buttons on the NY Times link and got a page of web code - should these links work?"
ref: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/002291.php

So we're getting there in the usability stakes, but still early days.
