Great post.

The only REAL place where the tension between digital and analog worlds and their relative "realness" is a big problem is in assessing mischief/possible mischief. For example, that cyber-terrorist who was implicated in that Canadian sting raises questions. Is the cyber "terrorist" committing acts that "really" hurt people. Maybe it isn't as hard as I think it is to determine what should be an offense and what should be free speech -- what "really" hurts people and what is just digital junk.

But I totally agree with you that the naysayers who claim the blogosphere etc. is like a reality TV show just don't have a clue as to the real friendships, learning relationships, inspiration etc... that has been faciliated by the Internet and is booming now with Web 2.0.

I explain Second Life and World of Warcraft as a near obliteration of the distinction that Carr and other snarky folks gets so much mileage out of.

Interesting rebutall.

"The main difference is that instead of our hazy memory of what happened we have a digital record. "

How can you explian "Second Life" and "World of Warcraft" - Both these are reality lives being immersed into "digital" mode ? They have psudo characters and real economies exist in this ecosystem. What happened here ? How did Digital become reality ?? Yeah, their are folks in there (digital style) making $$$ in the real world !!

There is a cross-over in existence, thats for sure, else the USG wont be considereding a tax bill on money making within the digital sphere ..correct ??

So what gives here actually ?? I am lost for words and thesis here

Virtual is no longer some fantastical green-screen mythical place with 0s and 1s whizzing around in Tron-like avatars.

Virtual is part of real. Virtual is real.

Good post!

For me, the worlds seem to be separated by those who have an understanding of what I do for a living (my coworkers, clients, colleagues) and those who don't (my parents, non-industry friends).

However, they rarely collide. It's more like they are of opposite polarity -- they just naturally repel each other. :)
