I'm a text-oriented person, even so (or maybe therefore), I want information visualizations to be both graphically effective and technically accurate. Make it vivid and make it right!

Tufte is brilliant at de- and re-constructing visualizations to show how it can be done. I found myself doing the same to a Google search log format, which used a filled line without any data points instead of a bunch of bars. Sometimes the medium sends the wrong message.

Not sure if you mean just for web ideas or for ideas in general. If you mean ideas in general, Quantum physics has been called the greatest idea of all time, but any visualisation has to leave out the myriad dimensions needed to describe it, so visualisations tend to over simplify and fall way short of capturing its complexities and inherent weirdness.

Similarly, the web is a multi-dimensional thing that's structure transcends the normal 3 dimensions we can visualise in. I think it's reasonable to assume that there can be complex web apps for which all visualisations, similar to quantum physics, inevitably oversimplify and gloss over some weird adn technical - but nevertheless essential - parts of the concept.

[...] The Value of Visualizing Information - Bokardo Information visualization as a business is also growing. I know of four companies, and I’m sure there are *many* more, that are doing awesome work basically making abstract concepts more clear by creating visualizations of them.
Visual illustrations of how a web app works are a great idea in many cases. We're working on some in our office, too.

Great to read a post about info design / visualization for social websites. That's what I've been researching for the past three years, and am launching a blog about it in a couple of weeks (although my own bent is the group/collaborative aspect, rather than socializing). As usual, Josh's comments resonated with me, even though I couldn't help feel the irony of two things:

1) Bokardo.com, IMHO, could itself use some visual representations of information (perhaps InfoDesign rather than DataVis)...
2) Having said that, I find this blog to sport one of the best visual designs around, even though it's almost entirely text-based. :)

[...] Netty Gritty wrote an interesting post today onHere’s a quick excerpt… geometries, and areas under curves, so we can’t fully understand without seeing something visually. If not by an actual illustration by the creator of the idea, then by one we make up in our heads, on the spot. Add Comment. [...]
