Interesting fact, I think almost any web-project had some kind of such a starting point, which boosted the amount of visitors significantly. YouTube just offered us a great example of such a phenomenon, which was realized in this video.

Viral marketing is just amazing, but it is so difficult to plan. I guess lots of marketing companies try to achieve such a success with their marketing strategies as YouTue has put before. But you'll never know if people really brim over with enthusiasm for your idea so that they will spread it all over the world. The uncertainty of success is very high.

I doubt it was one thing that rose YouTube above the many but just to add to the speculation, Micah Schaffer, brother of Akiva Schaffer, member of the Lonely Island has worked at YouTube since near the beginning. Answers the Why YouTube question.

If you haven't already done so, you should read the Tipping Point By Malcolm Gladwell. Great book that talks about social epidemics and why certain products, services or behaviors have a tipping point.

"The premise of this facile piece of pop sociology has built-in appeal: little changes can have big effects; when small numbers of people start behaving differently, that behavior can ripple outward until a critical mass or "tipping point" is reached, changing the world."

Great read!

Cheers
