It reminds me the difference between a shopkeeper shouting 'come and look' and a scam artist offering a freebie and then making the taker look bad for not feeling obligated for having accepted.

With the 'tell a friend' idea that Amazon and others have, someone comes across a site or a product or feature on a site, and uses the 'tell a friend' utility on the site to tell-a-friend.
The friend clicks the link and they see what is on offer. They are not committed and their email presence should not be recorded.

That is the only proper way to proceed.

I've found that going to specific niche review and fan sites to learn if a film is good or not is the best way to go. So if I want to watch a martial arts movie, I go direct to the fans to see if its good. Rotten Tomatoes is a pretty good meter to judge a movie as well.

You are right. There certainly isn't a black and white here of "passionates" vs "non-passionates". First there is the passion-tribes you belong to. I get passionate around wine, food, web, chocolate, horror movies, 80s music, etc. Someone else could get passionate around half of those things and whole list of others.

Then there are sliding scales of passion. Am I passionate enough about 80s music to post a blog about it? Maybe not, maybe only to read a blog. Am I passionate enough about wine to post a blog about? Yes definitely and sign me up for some wine blog RSS feeds while you are at it.

But even that is too static. We also need to add in the dimension of time. With the right encouragement, circumstances, and tools, I can potentially become more passionate (or less) about a particular area.

This is where I will whip out Kathy Sierra's Kick-Ass Curve:
http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/2005/10/getting_users_p.html

So there is no passionate and non-passionate. There are multiple tribes to which I am a part of, but at varying degrees of engagement that changes over time.

I received an invite from a friend (not a student), who just opened a Facbook account, and I'm horrified that my name and Email address is now posted somewhere on his account as an invited "friend", completely without my consent. I'm pretty sure he imported his whole AOL address book to do this, and I've asked him to delete my name at once.

I have no argument with anyone who wants to participate in Facebook, but I resent the privacy threat of giving them your whole list without the consent of any of the people on that list. There's no reason people could not merely send a message to all their contacts directly from their Email program, telling them how to join Facebook if the recipients want to participate.
